Published Sep 20, 2019Tegan and Sara are gearing up for the release of their memoir High School and their album Hey, I'm Just Like You, and they've just released another preview with the track "Don't Believe the Things They Tell You (They Lie)."
It follows the previously shared title track and "I'll Be Back Someday," and despite the title, it isn't so much a criticism on authority figures as it is a self-reflection on their own behaviour as teenagers.
They explained the song with a statement, which reads:
Our mother tells a story about watching the 1980s television show Punky Brewster with us when we were four years old. The episode's morality tale focused on lying, and near the end of the show, she describes one of us climbing onto her back, sobbing into her neck and confessing a lie we'd told her earlier in the day. At 15, we started telling lies again, and we absolved ourselves constantly in the lyrics of our songs.
Listen to "Don't Believe the Things They Tell You (They Lie)" below.
Hey, I'm Just Like You is due out September 27 via Sire Records. The twins' memoir High School is out September 24 via Simon & Schuster/MCD/Virago.
