Basia Bulat Preps for Carnegie Hall Show with Philip Glass
Published Feb 04, 2016Basia Bulat will play alongside Philip Glass at Carnegie Hall this month, a gig she says is "like a strange dream."
The Canadian singer — whose fourth studio record, Good Advice (one of Exclaim!'s 10 Most Anticipated Albums of 2016), comes out February 12 on Secret City — is on the bill alongside Glass, FKA twigs, Iggy Pop and Sharon Jones for this year's Tibet House Benefit Concert, happening February 22 at the famed New York venue.
"To get a personal invite from Philip Glass? I was pretty over the moon," the singer tells Exclaim! from her home in Montreal. "It wasn't totally out of the blue, he had been sent my music for an event that was planned for Toronto. [The singer was set to open Glass's Cape Breton Fire event at Massey Hall last summer, which was cancelled.] But still, it's not the kind of thing you expect. I'm so flattered to share the stage with an artist I admire so much."
Bulat is scheduled to perform two songs at the concert, details of which are still being finalized. While she is best known for playing guitar, autoharp and charango, she has also been playing piano since age three. Might there be some kind of onstage collaboration?
"I can't really say what's being planned. I'm afraid to jinx it!," she says. "I actually don't think I'm going to believe any of it until it actually happens. Much like when I [headlined] Massey Hall, it wasn't until I saw the photo and video evidence that I really believed it."
